Historic Portmarnock Golf Club in County Dublin, Ireland boasts rolling linksland, panoramic views
PORTMARNOCK, COUNTY DUBLIN, Ireland -- Known worldwide for their famous whiskey distillery, the Jameson family also founded County Dublin's Portmarnock Golf Club.
Its origins date back to 1858 when the Jameson family first decided to craft a golf course on the northern side of their property, St. Marnock's. It was the family's private course until 1894 when it was opened to the public as a nine-hole layout. It was expanded to a full 18 holes two years later.
There is nothing man-made about this course. All of its links features were crafted by nature, which is to say the rolling terrain plays no small role during the round. In addition to providing constant ups and downs, the elevations provide panoramic views that stretch all the way to the Hill of Howth and the Mountains of Mourne. The formidable layout, which stretches to over 7,300 yards from the back tees, requires a strong putting game in order to tackle the lightning fast greens.
The final five holes are Portmarnock Golf Club's most difficult, beginning with a par 4 that requires an accurate approach to a narrow green framed by bunkers.
