Two names equals one great links at County Sligo Golf Club (aka Rosses Point) in Ireland
ROSSES POINT, County Sligo, Ireland -- The stereotype of a flat links by the sea goes out the window at County Sligo Golf Club (also called Rosses Point).
This Harry Colt classic climbs up a huge ridge to the second green and third tee. From this perch, golfers can see five Irish counties, the Atlantic Ocean and the massive Benbulben Mountain, the tabletop rock that inspired poet W.B. Yeats.
Within the past five years, the club, home to the West of Ireland Championship since 1923, has added tees on six holes to stretch to 6,373 meters (roughly 6,969 yards), but the integrity of the layout built in 1927 remains intact. A fantastic four-hole loop starting at No. 10 zigzags through the best dunes of the day, kissing the beach and overlooking the ocean.
The finish is just as strong. The par-4 17th and 18th holes climb back up and over the ridge.
The nine-hole Bomore Course was added in 1999.
David Cunningham, a member since 1964, didn't hesitate when asked how County Sligo compares to Enniscrone Golf Club and Donegal Golf Club, two other great links in northwest Ireland.
"It is easily the best of them all," he said. "It is more difficult. It's got better holes. There are some great ones."
