Ireland golf in pictures: Connemara Golf Club
Connemara Golf Club in northwest Ireland is set in the rocky landscape near Clifden where famous pilots Alcock and Brown ended the first non-stop trans-Atlantic flight in 1919. A 2005 reenactment of the historic saw the pilots land on the 8th fairway.
The Championship golf course, opened in 1974 from an Eddie Hackett design, is a relative newcomer to the Irish links scene. The back nine occupies the property's most rolling terrain, with numerous elevated tees and greens. The front nine is on flatter land save for No. 9, a short par 4 that plays downhill to a nearly drivable green.
A third nine built in 2001 takes the course closer to the sea. It is usually reserved for nine-hole play and for overflow golfers on a busy summer weekends.
