Club de Golf Valderrama is considered to by many to be the European equivalent of Augusta. A Robert Trent Jones Sr. design of 18 holes right in the heart of the Andalusian countryside and maintained with such care that European and American players will think they are playing in heaven, although a lapse of concentration could rapidly be changing this view.

Valderrama owes its greatness, above all else, to the dedication of its current owner to perfection and beauty. The 4th hole, for example, is the signature hole and carries all the characteristics of a great Trent Jones hole, with a well protected, raised green. This makes for a really tough second shot if you go for it, and still tests even the best golfers who decide to reach the green in neg???

Valderrama achieved international recognition in 1989 when it became the venue for the Volvo Masters, the last tournament on the European tour. Faldo, Rafferty and Langer have all tasted victory at Valderrama. In 1997, the Ryder Cup came to Valderrama. At first the European PGA was reluctant that such a prestigious tournament should leave the British Isles. It eventually gave in to the charms of a continental course, situated in the very South of Europe.

Despite its reputation, Valderrama's management are keen to promote the club to all golfers and is careful to avoid any elitism.

Facilities include club rental, buggy hire, restaurant and bar. The Masters Bar is available to all visiting players and serves a wide-ranging snack and restaurant menu. The main Clubhouse restaurant can be booked for dinner in the evenings and gives visitors a chance to view the golf museum.

Course Details

Course Name: Valderrama Holes: 18 Yardage: 7018 SSS: 72
Valderrama is a 6380 metres par 72 with no hole of less than championship quality, but it can be fully enjoyed by players of all handicaps, thanks to Robert Trent Jones, Senior, whom many consider the leading golf architect of his day.

He designed the course in 1974 and at Jaime Ortiz-Patiño's urging came back to re-design it with additional land when the new Club was formed in 1985. Thereafter, it took only a few years to win recognition in the 'Golf World' rankings as the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position held ever since. The amenability of the golf course to the handicap golfer and its deliberate severity to the championship player owe much to the extensive range of tees.

Each hole has a Professional tee (6380 metres), a Club Championship tee (5864), an Executive tee (5481) and a Seniors' tee (5038), as well as a ladies Professional tee (5284) and a ladies Club tee (4863). The tees are differentiated not just by distance but by careful siting. The fairways are widely considered the best in Europe, while the greens have been compared by Davis Love and many others with Augusta.

Valderrama has two prevailing winds: the poniente from the land, which in summer can be very hot, and the levante from the Mediterranean, which brings a cooler sea breeze. The changed conditions when one is blowing add variety to a golf course that is already rich in shot values.
