Golf Courses and Tourism in Belgium
Belgium, a monarchy of only 30,000sq km with a population of 10 million, lies between France, Germany and Holland with the UK just a short ferry rise across the English Channel. Belgians speak French, German or Dutch depending on there they live. English is widely understood which of course is a great convenience for the tourist. The landscape ranges from the lowlands of Flanders in the west to the Ardennes mountains in the East. Climate is temperate, similar to the UK, so golfers should pack their rain wear.Belgium has a rich tradition and trace its history back to about 300bc when a Celtic tribe, the Belgae, occupied an area which approximates Belgium as we know it today. Since then the country has been annexed by others including France and Austria. Did you know that Napoleons great defeat, the Battle of Waterloo, was fought in Belgium. Belgium is where the Battle of Ypres was fought in WW1 and where the Germans made last push against the Allies in WW2 in the Battle of the Bulge. Of course, Belgium itself is a former colonial power and once occupied the Congo (modern Zaire) in Africa. Today, Belgium is most famous for hosting the European Parliament in Brussels.
Transport in Belgium is excellent with a well established rail and road network. The main cities of Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent offer a distinctly European style of historic buildings, markets and café bars and restaurants. They also offer a host of sights to see with innumerable shops, museums and galleries. Belgium is famous for beer. chocolate, diamonds, lace and speciality markets such as antiques. The tourist does not need to any special arrangements other than those one would normally make when visiting a first world foreign country.
Golf in Belgium is not a major sport if one considers the number of golf courses and the large population density. However like all continental countries the number of courses is steadily increasing. It would be difficult to recommend Beglium solely as a golfing holiday destination. However it wouldn't be a bad choice for one wishing to combine a cultural holiday cum city tourist holiday with some golf. We wouldn't be surprised if golf in Belgium was mostly popular with foreign business and diplomatic visitors .
