Pannal Golf Club lies to the south of Harrogate amidst glorious countryside. The course was designed by Sandy Herd, the 1902 Open Champion, in 1906. Superb views further enhance the course which is laid out on a stretch of gorse-covered, tree-lined land. To the west in Wharfedale, the landmark Almscliffe Crag, to the north the Crimple Valley and viaduct made famous in Turner's painting and to the east, the rolling plains of York with views on a clear day of the Minster. The quality of Pannal's course has long been acknowledged and the Club has hosted many prestigious events. A few to note are the English Women's Championship held in 1927; the inaugural PGA Matchplay Championships in 1955 (won by Ken Bousfield) the British Youths' Championship in 1975 (won by Nick Faldo) the Trusthouse Forte PGA Seniors' Championship held in 1985 (won by Neil Coles) and in 1991 the Ladies' British Amateur (won by French player Valerie Michaud).
