Harborne is a lovely and challenging golf course which, if it had just a little more length would probably be regarded as one of the best in the Midlands. The course's main attribute is having the good fortune to have been designed by the great HS Colt and the benefit of being able to mature with age. The result is an outstanding and at times beautiful golf course acting almost like a haven in the middle of bustling Birmingham.
The front nine is arguably the tougher, with a number of stern par 4s to test even the best players, notably the second and fourth allied to the excellent par 3 fifth. Personally however, I always preferred the prettier back nine which has a collection of outstanding golf holes. The tenth is a relatively easy but aesthetically pleasing short par 4, but this is followed by a classic HS Colt long hole.
The par 4 eleventh guarded off the tee by a stream at around 200 yards demands that the golfer is down the left hand side of the fairway in order to open up a severely sloping green with a bunker eating into the right hand side. The twelfth and thirteenth are two more very good par 4s followed by the lovely dropping par 3 14th, which in turn is followed by the lovely short par 4 fifteenth with its heavily bunkered green set at a 45 degree angle.
Sixteen is another medium length par 4 before the nine finishes with the long uphill seventeenth that I always seemed to playing in the gathering gloom and the long par 3 eighteenth that requires at least a three wood approach.
All in all I have very pleasant memories of playing Harborne, a challenging but fair course and probably deserving of the title 'undiscovered gem'.
